The Recessionist

You try telling them the Labour party is about them

They vote for fascists because they feel small

Feel like they are big, strong, and dimwitted

You tell them the man in the suit with the funny accent

Cares about whether they build things with their hands.

Ireland has gangs now

That beat up people, nearly to the point of death

Not because they are Catholic, or Protestant

But because the gangs are bored

And they feel small

And they need to feel powerful, somehow.

The Jews of America filed their way past

One by one

The great villain, the great Judas,

Bernie Madoff. They spit

They cursed. They crucified him.

Sheila lost everything, and David did too.

And oh, it is hot

It is hot and flammable

As if flint might strike a stone

At any time

And all of us

Ignite.
